wrecking ball

Listening to Bruce Springsteen’s latest album, Wrecking Ball, this morning.

So many of these songs feel familiar, known, right. Not because they sound like other songs I know.

Because they sound like the truth.

This reminds me of Jeff Bridges’ character in Crazy Heart, writing a new song for Maggie Gyllenhaal’s character.*

He strums, sings a few lines, and asks if she knows the song. She thinks she knows it, but can’t place who sings it. He tells her that’s how all the best songs are, you’re sure you’ve heard them before.

You know them in your heart.

That is what this music is doing today. Filling my heart on a Sunday in Seattle.

What is the music that does it for you, that you knew in your heart, the first time you heard it? What is your most recent new music?

This is the video for the first single off the album.

This is the most recent single, much quieter.

*I’ve written about this movie before – it is sticking with me, still.
