when I’m 64

brunch with dear friends

Once the realisation is accepted that even between the closest human beings infinite distances continue, a wonderful living side-by-side can grow, if they succeed in loving the distance between them which makes it possible for each to see the other whole against the sky. ~Rainer Maria Rilke

Recently, we had lunch with dear friends.

Dear, because Ed and I have each known them since long before we met each other.
Dear, because they were the ones who introduced us.
Dear, because they witnessed and signed the marriage license at our Kauai wedding.

These friends are beyond special to us. And they just celebrated their 24th wedding anniversary.

I know, right? Looking at them, you might wonder how that’s even possible. Living well, taking care of each other, being kind. These are kind faces. These are faces – and hearts – that know laughter and love and patience. They’ve earned the years, this I know.

When we’ve been married 24 years, we’ll be 64. These two will still be blazing the path out ahead of us.

Another in my series of grow quotes for my one little word. I was planning to use this quote for our wedding anniversary in July, but that didn’t happen. This feels even better.
